Career counselling in Czechia and Norway
As a result for long systemic negligence of career counselling sector in Czech secondary schools, it still holds a marginal position in comparison to other school guidance services which often results in limited guidance. On the whole, career counselling in Czechia has a limited impact and is mainly focused on bridging the transition between school and work.
On the other hand, in Norway, career counsellors are required to study a special programme and their main workload consists of career provision. Both countries have been strongly impacted by the covid-19 pandemic, which aggravated the issues of dropout and overall students‘ motivation a well-being.
A new structured approach to career counselling services to address the current challenges students and counsellors are facing is needed. Therefore, a practical and inspirational easy-to-use roadmap for school career counsellors, which would help them to guide, support, develop, and monitor students’ career development, is necessary.
About the project and our funding:
The project Shaping Career Towards Students' Empowerment (EHP-CZ-ICP-4-028) was funded by the EEA Financial Mechanism 2014-2021, Programme Education. The EEA Grants are funded by Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. The Grants have two goals – to contribute to a more equal Europe, both socially and economically – and to strengthen the relations between Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, and the 15 Beneficiary States in Europe.
Modules for Learning
Together our project developed learning activities that were tested out in Norway and Czechia, and which we hope will be useful for counsellors in other schools.
Learning how to learn, motivation, together with hard-skills and soft-skills development, as well as embarking on life-long learning, development of entrepreneurial competences, together with bringing in non-formal education channels will result in a greater variety of choices for further active career development, raising awareness, encouraging active participation in civil society to create active citizens who pursue their career and life goals and acknowledge the role of non-formal education including volunteering.
Continuing Education for Career Counsellors
We got together Czech and Norwegian school careeer counsellors from 3 VET secondary schools and
included a representative of a non-formal education provider to exchange experience and create
Workshop Modules based on four realms of school career counselling to help students, especially
disadvantaged ones, to succeed on their educational paths, prevent dropout, and achieve their career
goals. The Modules were developed, tested and adjusted during peer-learning activities, online
meetings, and in real school environments by working with group of students and during individual
sessions. Disadvantaged students and students with specific needs were given special attention and
individual support.
Support for Communities
Empowering students gives them an opportunity to master their own lives. Well-structured career
counselling will help students to deal with success and adversity, personal and professional challenges which might occur in their lifetime. Paying special attention to students from disadvantaged backgrounds, providing them with special assistance and support when delivering inclusive counselling services, will improve their successful school performance and lead to better employment prospects and satisfaction.
“It is perfectly true, as philosophers say, that life must be understood backwards. But they forget the other proposition, that it must be lived forwards.”
